Les Brown To Speak at Business Excellence Forum

Les Brown is one of the top motivational speakers in the world and we are very excited he will be offering his wisdom Saturday, August 19, 2011 at the Business Excellence Forum at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami, Florida.

Brown’s life story is one of perseverance, to say the least. As a baby, he and his twin were abandoned by their mother. They were adopted when they were six weeks old, but that was just the first challenge Brown faced head-on.

As he grew up, Brown was labeled a slow learner and developmentally challenged until a former teacher convinced him to not live down to the expectations of others.

Self-education led to growth and, eventually, he found the greatness that was inside of him. Soon he was a community leader then a political commentator and then a three-term state legislator.

From there he moved on to make his greatest impact on the world as a keynote speaker and trainer, helping thousands of people reach their potential.

Brown is also a best- selling author, having written It’s Not Over Until You Win and Live Your Dreams.

He delivers his message eloquently and with passion, so don’t miss him at the Business Excellence Forum.

The Strength of a System

College football season is almost here, and some teams might use the spread offense.

College football season is almost here, and some teams might use the spread offense.

College football season here, and that means the return of the spread offense.

If you follow college football, you should recognize the term “spread offense.” It’s an offensive system that is very difficult to beat according to many college football coaches.

Note the term “system.”

Because of this system, many college football teams have run the offense to tremendous success, including the Houston Cougars in 1989, Georgia Southern in 2000, West Virginia in 2005, Hawaii in 2006 and Florida Gators in 2008.

In 2008, Florida won its second national title in three years – and is looking at another chance this season, with the same offense and many of the same players returning to run it.

The spread offense works by spreading out the offense across the field, taking advantages of mis-matches on the defense. For example, the ball could be passed to a wide receiver, who is defended by a heavier linebacker.

The system puts pressure on the defense to make every tackle count – a very difficult thing to do.

Since the offensive players are spread out everywhere, there isn’t a sure-fire way to defend against system, which might explain the correlation between teams who use it and teams who win a championship.

Because the system is adaptable, a variety of coaches have used it, with different teams, in different parts of the country. But they have achieved the same results.

The same is true in business and in business coaching.

The goal of using systems in a business is to save time and energy and to achieve consistent results.

For example, The 5 Ways – a system with five factors that are guaranteed to multiply profit – is the system Brad Sugars and his team of business coaches have developed and apply to all of their coaching clients.

Even though each client runs a vastly different business, in the end, the system works.

It doesn’t matter who the “players” are, or what the business is, the 5 Ways always delivers results.

Even Cemeteries Are on Twitter!

If a cemetery can generate business with Twitter, so can other businesses.

If a cemetery can generate business with Twitter, so can other businesses.

What’s the least likely business to send Tweets?

How about a cemetery?

In Orlando, Florida, the Greenwood Cemetery is tweeting to people on a daily basis, and creating a lot of buzz in the process.

The Greenwood Cemetery is one of the oldest in the Orlando area and has set up a Twitter account that Tweets interesting facts about Orlando and the people who made the city’s history.

But that isn’t the only way the Greenwood Cemetery is creating new customers. They also conduct Moonlight Walking Tours about 10 times a year.

So what can small businesses learn from Greenwood Cemetery?

First of all, social marketing is a tremendous way to create buzz around your business, even for a business like a cemetery, which really doesn’t have too many repeat customers.

Second, because a cemetery doesn’t get repeat customers, the owners of the cemetery found other ways to create revenue for their company by taking advantage of the resources that are available to them – like their nighttime tours of the 130-year-old cemetery.

By staying connected on Twitter and finding their niche, the Greenwood Cemetery is a great example of the right way to grow any business.

What do you think about the Greenwood Cemetery’s unique take on their business? For more ideas on how to creatively market your business, see what a business coach can do, and try a free business coaching session.

Franchises CAN Outlast Their Parent Company

What's the fate of Fat Burger?

What's the fate of Fat Burger?

The idea that some franchises can be left hanging after a parent company experiences financial trouble is a scary thought. But it can happen, and it’s happened a lot more in this economy.

Some franchises, like Dial-A-Mattress and Fatburger are left in limbo while their companies decide what they should do. Dial-A-Mattress was sold to the highest bidder, Sleepy’s Mattress, for $25 million, and franchisees are waiting to hear if they’ll be kept or not. Similarly, Fatburger Restaurants of California and Fatburger Restaurants of Nevada, subsidiaries of Fatburger Corp., filed for Chapter 11 in April, and its 90 franchisees are waiting to hear their fate.

However, some franchisees are able to pull through. Take Cork and Olive in Tampa, Florida. Franchise owners didn’t even realize they’d filed for Chapter 11 until a laid-off employee of a company-owned store applied for a job at a franchise.

However, they’ve managed to stay alive, and all the franchisees meet regularly to discuss how to keep their brand alive and well – without their parent company.  It just takes good planning and focus on business fundamentals.

This is exactly what ActionCOACH specializes in – helping small businesses be successful, especially when something unplanned happens. Even if a parent company files for Chapter 11, a franchise may be able to remain successful.

As Brad Sugars has said, managing business processes and cashflow is key. Also, focusing on what differentiates the business can also be crucial in surviving.

ActionCOACH has several franchises all over the country, and just like other small businesses, how they manage their individual businesses is a key factor to their success.

All businesses should focus on controlling  their operations at all times. Sometimes a downturn gives businesses a “kick in the pants” to help them realize what they need to do in order to survive – and in all cases, it’s about getting back to the basics.

Is the Recession Really Over?

BusinessWeek's photo captures today's employment situation.

Just last week in Bloomberg Businessweek, job market statistics were published…and they may not be what you thought they were.

The U.S. unemployment rate hit a 26-year high in 2009 (but it still didn’t top the Great Depression’s unemployment rate of about 25%) and the magazine predicts that the U.S’ long-term unemployment average of 6% won’t come back until long after 2011. In fact, economists predict the unemployment rate will stay around 10% this year, and only decrease to 9.3% next year.

But there’s a glimmer – a tiny glimmer – of hope: health care professions (nurses, orderlies, home health aides), customer service professions, retail jobs, office clerks, accountants and auditors all top the list of jobs expected to grow most by 2018, and for the most part, they’re in high demand today.

That’s a tiny glimmer because, well, 2018 is a ways away right now.

Armed with these statistics, business coaches should be ready to take businesses in need of coaching by storm. The full article included a map which color-coded states’ unemployment rates; California, Nevada, Oregon, Michigan, South Carolina and Florida still have state unemployment rates of 11% or higher.

Businesses across the country have been affected by the recession, but small business coaching shouldn’t be overlooked, either. What can you do to help businesses in your area?

Using Systems that Deliver Results
