Make Sure Your Business Has Staying Power

Who would’ve thought 20 years ago that we would one day be able to download movies? Or choose which ones we want online and a company would send us those DVDs in the mail? Or that we’d be able to download books for less expensive than the cost of a hardcover or paperback book?

Well, today, more and more people are choosing Netflix over Blockbuster, and books for Amazon’s Kindle over Borders or Barnes and Noble. A place where people can rent all different kinds of movies, from the latest releases to classics to foreign films was a great idea – but it seems Netflix has come up with a better idea. Blockbuster tried to keep their brick and mortar stores and offer a mail option…but it doesn’t seem to be working as well.

Same with Amazon’s Kindle – Borders hasn’t made an attempt to fight back against the digital book formats because they’re confident people want a place to sit and read, “meet others who share their passion for books and engage in the sheer joy and indulgence of spending hours exploring.” But what happens when you’ve got a crowd of people in your store…but they’re not buying anything? Just perusing what books are out there, figuring out what books they should download next?

Look at the other businesses that may not make it to 2020, and make sure your business isn’t modeled similarly…

Master Mentor – Jeff Gitomer

We’ve said before that Brad Sugars is an excellent mentor – but even people like him, and CEOs and founders of companies everywhere have mentors they’ve learned from.

Sugars is highlighting the advice of his mentors in his audio Web series “Master Mentors.” Currently featured is Jeff Gitomer, an American author, professional speaker and business trainer who lectures about sales, customer loyalty and personal development internationally.

Gitomer has written nine books, including best sellers, “The Sales Bible,” “The Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude,” and his most successful book, “The Little Red Book of Selling.”

All Gitomer’s titles have reached No. 1 on Amazon.com, and collectively his books have appeared on major best-seller lists nationwide more than 750 times. Gitomer also writes a syndicated column, Sales Moves, which is published worldwide in American and European business journals and newspapers.

Connection = communication

I recently read Michael Losier’s new book Law of Connection. Michael wrote the book The Law of Attraction way before The Secret. I remember I saw Michael speak a few years back and what I really liked about his book – compared to the gazillion released since then on the subject – is that his book is practical. While the Law of Attraction for many is a bit out there … Michael made the whole thing less like modern Voodoo! So I picked up Law of Connection without even cracking the spine to take a sneak peek inside.

I was surprised (pleasantly) to see this book was about communicating with Visual, Kinesthetic, Auditory types. It also included Digital people.

The book concisely and precisely describes how to connect with people based on how they like to relate to others.

This is what I know about myself I am a visual – and I find it hard to relate to people who are kinesthetic. I also get along well with auditory types because when I say something they immediately understand what I am saying.

According to the book – visuals see things in pictures, they move from one thing to another at lightning speed. They are impatient people. Kinesthetics on the other hand are a lot slower to act and take longer to make decisions. Auditory people are eloquent speakers, “ideas” people – but tend to be blunt and harsh and might seem too direct.

What is great about this book – that it helped me to understand what each type brings to the table.

Some might find the book corny with characters like Auditory Allan and Visual Vicky. I suggest you read it, be open minded and try to adapt your communication style based on what type people fall in.

I know ActionCOACH coaches use an assessment tool based on Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic learning styles along with the DISC behavioral profiling tools. If you are interested in having the team in your office communicate better – I would also recommend hiring a coach to do a workshop on this.

P.S. I happen to know that Brad Sugars is auditory.
